Concept:
Label: Number of episodes
Concept Guidance:
This is the number, during the relevant period, of episodes of treatment.
Form-Specifc Guidance:
Report in the quarter that the treatment ceased, this excludes incomplete episodes.
When reporting by age category, the episodes should be reported against the relevant age at the time the treatment was done, not the against the age of the person in the current reporting period, because sometimes claims are made and benefits paid long after the actual treatment.
An episode is defined as: a) for hospital treatment - the period between the insured person's admission to the hospital and discharge from that hospital, including leave periods; or b) for hospital substitute treatment or hospital treatment that is provided, or arranged, with the direct involvement of a hospital - the continuous period between the commencement and cessation of the treatment.
